Here at Palen Music Center, we love effects that push sonic boundaries, and the JHS Pedals 3 Series PHERB delivers an inspiring, unconventional twist on modulation and ambience. Born out of player requests for a take on the infamous EHX Holy Grail "Flerb" setting, JHS bypassed the harshness of flanged reverb to build what should have been all along: phaser plus reverb. The core tone centers around a dark, moody, lo-fi reverb running directly into an always-on vintage four-stage phase shifter. Far from a clinical digital effect, the PHERB provides a chunky, chorused wash that subtly pulses at longer decay times, taking your instrument from subtle ambient depth to rich, synth-like drone pads.
Under the hood, JHS engineered the circuit to stay remarkably musical and articulate in any mix. Inspired by classic four-stage phasers like the Phase 90, the feedback loop has been left off and the notch sweeps are shifted higher in the frequency spectrum so they never swallow the low-mid frequencies of your reverb. When you want to push your tone into aggressive territory, flipping the onboard BREAK toggle routes your guitar through an asymmetric bitcrusher with analog-style clipping before it reaches the effects. This unleashes a roaring, broken texture reminiscent of a vintage 1960s Jordan Bosstone fuzz colliding head-on with a 1990s grunge stompbox.
Proudly built in Missouri, the 3 Series PHERB is housed in JHS's durable, tour-ready metal enclosure, offering boutique quality at an accessible price point. Its intuitive layout features Mix, Speed, and Length controls, allowing you to easily tailor everything from tight spatial reflections to staggering 50-second decay trails. You can even dial the Speed control fully counterclockwise to bypass the phaser for standalone lo-fi reverb. Whether you are creating shoegaze soundscapes, industrial noise, or ambient textures, the PHERB is an inventive sound-design tool ready for your pedalboard.
