Before the Telecaster transformed the musical landscape in 1951, Leo Fender was busy refining concepts with early dual-pickup prototypes. The Fender Custom Shop Vintage Custom 1950 Double Esquire pays tribute to one of those elusive, highly coveted early instruments. Built around a lightweight, two-piece offset-seam ash body wrapped in a time-correct NOS flash-coat lacquer Nocaster Blonde finish, this instrument offers an authentic glimpse into the foundational era of solidbody electric guitar design.
At the heart of its remarkable voice is a pair of Custom Shop hand-wound '50-'51 Blackguard single-coil pickups wired with modified '51 Nocaster electronics. Instead of a standard tone knob, a specialized blender pot allows you to blend the neck pickup seamlessly with the bridge pickup in position one, while an added resistor on the rhythm circuit dials in sweet, warm output.
