At Palen Music Center, we believe that music makes a difference in the lives of people. One of our great missions is helping others learn how to express themselves through music. Not only are our instructors great teachers but they are also people of great character. Our Performance Week Program gives you the opportunity to perform what you are learning.

J. Blevins

Guitar

J. Blevins joined PMC in 2019, and he teaches guitar. He has an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts in Music from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. He began playing the euphonium at age 9 and the guitar at age 15. J. took guitar lessons throughout his entire collegiate career from Ron Singleton. He has experience playing jazz, classical, country, and rock, among other genres. He is currently a recording artist with the rock band Blueshell Bombshell. J’s favorite thing about teaching music is passing along knowledge and helping students feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Seth Boyer

Percussion

Seth Boyer joined the PMC family in 2017, and specializes in teaching drums and percussion. He has a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance with an emphasis in Percussion. He began taking piano lessons in 2000 and started percussion in band in 2004. He has taught under Dr James Clanton at Pittsburg State University from 2011 to 2017. In addition, he has held the position of percussion instructor at Joplin High School since January of 2016. He also serves as a clinician for various southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri schools. Seth’s favorite thing about teaching music is to see students grow not only as strong, proficient musicians, but also to grow as people.


Sandy Durbin

Brass & Woodwind Instruments

Sandy Durbin joined the PMC family in 2016, and teaches all band instruments. She received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Missouri State University. She taught band for 34 years in five different schools including Seneca, Bolivar and Houston, Mo. Sandy says, “My favorite thing about teaching lessons at Palen is hearing my students enjoy making music and being successful in their school programs.”


Cathy Holt

Piano, Voice, Woodwind, & Brass

Cathy Holt joined the PMC family in 2009, and teaches piano, voice and beginning band instruments. She has a Bachelor of Music Education from Missouri Southern State University and has 35 years of teaching vocal and instrumental music in public and private schools K-12. In addition, she is active as a certified adjudicator for Missouri, Oklahoma, & Kansas district & state music festivals. Cathy says, “For over 40 years, I have loved to introduce the love of music to students,old and young. I love to nurture their growth & development as they learn.”



Emily Mullins

Strings

Emily Mullins joined the PMC family in 2017, and specializes in teaching strings. She has studied music since 2007, cello since 2009, and has played in two different orchestras. Influential teachers include William Elliot and Amelia Markley. Emily enjoys passing her love of music to her students.


Jill Spencer

Piano & Voice

Jill Spencer joined the PMC family in 2018 and teaches piano and voice. She has a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory. Jill taught elementary music at a Christian school in Jefferson City before moving to Joplin. She has taught private lessons for 25+ years. Jill’s two passions in life are music and kids so teaching privately here at Palen is a perfect fit and brings her much joy!

Jeffrey Yates

Guitar, Fretted Instruments, Brass Instruments, & Piano

Jeff Yates joined PMC in 2012, and he teaches all fretted instruments, piano, brass, woodwinds and upright bass. In addition to teaching at PMC, he is also the Band and Choir Director in Miller, MO. Jeff graduated from Missouri Southern State University with a degree in Instrumental Performance, and is currently a member of the Heartland Opera Theatre and Southern Symphony Orchestra as a bassist, and The Ozark Festival Orchestra as the principal tubist. His goal in teaching music is to train up competent and confident musicians and to share the joy music brings.
